Hope Athletes Receive All-MIAA Honors in Spring Sports
HOLLAND -- Hope College athletes who compete in spring
sports have been presented honors by the Michigan Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (MIAA).
Hope teams captured conference championships this spring in
baseball and women's tennis while tying for second place in men's
tennis and women's track and ending third in softball and tying
for third in men's track.
Senior Mike Meeuwsen of Rockford was voted the most valuable
MIAA player in baseball while sophomore Lindsay Etheridge of
Grand Rapids received the honor in women's tennis. Both are
graduates of Grand Rapids Christian High School.
Six members of the championship baseball team received first
team All-MIAA recognition. Honored for the second year were
junior shortstop Dean Esteves of Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS),
senior third baseman Chad Ruby of Humboldt, Iowa (Humboldt HS)
and junior pitcher Adam Labbe of Cadillac (Cadillac HS). Also
honored were Mike Meeuwsen, junior second baseman Matt Klein of
DeWitt (DeWitt HS) and sophomore outfielder Ben Fellows of DeWitt
(Lansing Eastern HS).
Achieving All-MIAA first team honors in tennis were Lindsay
Etheridge, sophomore Paul Lillie of Roseville, Minn. (Roseville
HS), senior Jeff MacDoniels of Holland (Holland HS) and sophomore
Jennifer Smith of Holland (Holland HS). Second team honorees
were senior Steve DeVrieze of Midland (Midland HS), freshman
Kristin Kooyer of Holland (Holland Christian HS), and freshman
Julie Murray of Spring Lake (Spring Lake HS).
DeVrieze was presented the Lawrence Green Scholarship by the
MIAA men's tennis coaches. The award is based on academic
performance in memory of the late Lawrence "Doc" Green, physical
educator, athletic trainer and coach at Hope.
Hope placed five players on the All-MIAA softball teams.
Junior pitcher Lisa Larzelere of Omaha, Neb. (Westside HS) is a
first team honoree for the third consecutive year. She is joined
on the first team by junior first baseman Gina Zanin of Lemont,
Ill. (Brookfield HS). Second team softball honorees are junior
outfielder Christa Murphy of Midland (Midland HS), sophomore
third baseman Sarah Paccione of Kalamazoo (Portage Central HS),
and sophomore second baseman Heather Roy of Alpena (Alpena HS).
Five Hope athletes were voted to the All-MIAA track teams.
Honored in women's track were sophomore Jennifer Ernst of
Westerville, Ohio (South HS), senior Ellen Schultz of Maple City
(Glen Lake HS) and freshman Emily Sowers of Grand Rapids (GR
Christian HS) while men's track all-leaguers are senior Jeremy
Bogard of Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and junior Mark
Youngs of Hastings (Hastings HS). Schultz and Bogard have the
distinction of being All-MIAA in both cross country and track.
